Maguire Centre

The Maguire Center Program provides services to individuals in the community who may need some support in maintaining independence. Our goal is to provide our clients with the social and functional support needed by linking individuals to different members of the healthcare team including continuing care aides, recreation coordinators, social work, nursing, dietitian, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists. Individuals can self-refer to the program or can get support from their physician, continuing care coordinator, or any other member of the health-care team.

Participation in this program could result in a variety of different services including:

  • Support with bathing
  • Participation in social activities
  • Respite for your caregiver
  • Increasing strength with physiotherapy
  • Hands-on support with therapy
  • Cognitive testing
  • Learning the skills to navigate mobility challenges

Geriatric Assessment
Rehabilitation Unit (GARU)

The Geriatric Assessment and Rehabilitation Unit (GARU) is a 14-bed inpatient unit for individuals who require a comprehensive program to reach a higher level of independence through rehabilitation and assessment.

The rehabilitation component focuses on improving functional ability to assist individuals to attain their highest achievable level of health, wellness, and independence.

The assessment component is designed to benefit individuals with multiple physical and cognitive challenges. The goal of the program is to provide an extensive assessment of the physical, emotional, and social status of individuals experiencing a recent decline in function and/or cognitive capacity.

Each client has individual needs and identified goals that are determined collaboratively with our highly trained team of professionals. Our focus is working collaboratively with the client and family to establish a personalized treatment plan. Members of the professional team include physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nursing, continuing care aides, social workers, physicians, dietitians, and other professionals as required.

Length of stay is varied, depending on individual care plans and rehabilitation potential. Each individual journey is a shared experience with the client, family, and the team who establish goals of care at each interval of progression keeping the discharge plan at the forefront every step of the journey.

Physician coverage is provided by a core group of doctors who have an interest in geriatric medical care. These physicians make regular visits and their recommendations for follow-up care are forwarded to the family physician upon discharge.
